MCT Oil 101

Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil and coconut oil are fats that have risen in popularity alongside the keto diet and among athletes and bodybuilders. While coconut oil and MCT oil have overlapping characteristics, they each have unique benefits and uses.

The difference is in the medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) – these are fats that are primarily used by the body as a source of energy, rather than being stored as body fat. The difference between medium-chain and long-chain triglycerides is that based on their structure – they are the right length (shorter) and therefore will break down quickly to be absorbed into your body via your liver, where they are converted to energy – or ketones. Being easily absorbed, MCT Oil can be used as an instant source of energy since it enters your cells without first being broken down.

Ketones are the by-products of the MCTs. Once they are sent into your bloodstream, your muscles and tissues can use them for fuel. Ketones also cross the blood/brain barrier. In this manner, they become an energy source for the brain, helping brain cells to survive better, which in turn can offer support for age-related cognitive decline.

Being of medium length and broken down quickly prevents MCTs from being stored as body fat when consumed as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. This is how MCTs have become a great source of energy for workouts, for individuals interested in building muscle and endurance (such as marathon runners), and in weight management when used correctly. It has also become very popular with those following the keto diet, due to its nutrient-dense properties.

MCT Oil should be introduced slowly to prevent digestive issues, that is, until tolerance can be built up. Recommended use is 1 teaspoon, 1–3 times daily.

As mentioned, a great way to start introducing MCT Oil slowly into your healthy lifestyle is to add a spoonful to your daily smoothie or smoothie bowl. It mixes well with any fruits, greens, or protein sources you would normally add to a smoothie and will provide you with the energy you seek. Once your digestion builds up some tolerance, you can start to incorporate MCT Oil in other ways. Try making a salad dressing with some chopped herbs of your choice and balsamic vinegar with a spoonful of MCT Oil. So fresh and tasty on any type of salad or fresh bowl!
